June’s Employment Situation Summary released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that more jobs were added in June than originally expected. In fact, the total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 222,000 in June as opposed to the anticipated 175,000.

Interestingly, the US unemployment rate remained roughly the same at 4.4% (as compared to 4.3% last month). The report found that average hourly wages increased by 4 cents for private sector workers.

The top industries that added jobs were healthcare (+ 37,000 jobs), professional services (+ 35,000 jobs), food services (+ 29,000 jobs), social assistance (+ 23,000 jobs) financial (+ 17,000 jobs) and mining (+ 8,000 jobs). Other industries saw little change in job growth for the month of June.

“It’s pretty clear that the trend in employment growth is strong enough to keep the unemployment rate trending down,” said Jim O’Sullivan, Chief United States Economist for High Frequency Economics. On average, the US added 194,000 jobs per month in 2017 thus far.

Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA), the Global Advisor on Staffing Solutions, also found that temporary positions in the US rose by 13,400 from the month of May to June. It remains to be seen what the rest of 2017 will look like for job growth in regards to temporary and permanent roles.
